In the late 1960s, the firm of S. Kumar in Calcutta bought a number of dies from Dinky Toys and manufactured these models under license. At first, the Indian-made models were sold as Dinky Toys, but around 1970 the name was changed to Nicky Toys. It is said that Meccano, the maker of Dinky Toys, was unhappy with the quality of the models and insisted on the change of the name. In the course of time, Nicky Toys changed baseplates, wheels and other parts of the models. In addition to copies of British Dinky Toys, the range included models of the Standard Herald and the Standard 20 minibus, Indian-built cars based on the Triumph Herald and Standard Atlas also modelled by Dinky Toys England, and some taxi and police versions of the British models.
